Weeks 13 & 14 of Pregnancy: Entering the Second Trimester
February 10, 2026
As you enter Weeks 13 and 14 of pregnancy, you are officially stepping into the second trimester. A season often marked by continued growth, increased energy, and important developmental milestones. While every pregnancy is unique, these weeks represent a meaningful transition for both your body and your developing fetus.
Week 13: A New Trimester Begins
Welcome to Week 13! This week often signals the start of the second trimester, a time when many women notice relief from early pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and fatigue.¹
During Week 13:
- The fetus is roughly the size of a lemon.¹
- The head, once large compared to the body, is becoming more proportional as the body continues to grow.¹
- Tiny fingerprints are forming, creating unique patterns that will remain for life.¹
- The kidneys are now functioning and producing urine, which contributes to the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus.¹
- Vocal cords are developing, and reflexes like sucking may begin, though these movements are still uncoordinated.¹
Inside the woman’s body, the uterus is expanding upward, which may cause their abdomen to become more noticeable. Some women also experience increased appetite and energy as hormone levels begin to stabilize during this stage.¹
Week 14: Growth and Refinement Continue
By Week 14, development continues at a steady pace, with many systems becoming more refined and coordinated.²
At this stage:
- The fetus is approximately the size of a lime.²
- Facial muscles are developing, allowing for subtle expressions such as squinting or frowning.²
- Arms and legs are lengthening, helping the body appear more proportionate.²
- The liver begins producing bile, while the spleen takes on a role in producing red blood cells, important steps in overall organ function.²
- The risk of miscarriage continues to decrease as the pregnancy progresses through the second trimester.²
Many women feel more physically comfortable during this time, though symptoms such as mild aches, stretching sensations, or nasal congestion may occur as the body adapts to pregnancy changes.²
What This Stage May Mean for You
Weeks 13 and 14 represent a period of stability and growth. As the foundational structures are already in place, the coming weeks will focus on maturation, strengthening, and continued development.
This can be a helpful time to:
- Continue routine prenatal care
- Ask questions about fetal development and available support
- Pay attention to physical and emotional well-being
