NEW Study on The Abortion Pill Reveals Significant Risks to Women

June 10, 2025

Our goal is to provide medically accurate information in a compassionate, non-judgmental environment so that you can make a decision with confidence, peace, and clarity.

The Abortion Pill, also called a medication abortion or the chemical abortion regimen, has been in the news recently. A new study based on actual medical insurance claims has uncovered crucial data about the risks women have experienced after taking these pills – many of these risks are significant.

What Is the Abortion Pill?

The Abortion Pill is actually a two-step process that uses two different medications to end an early pregnancy (up to 10 weeks):

  1. Mifepristone – The first pill is taken in a medical setting or at home. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. Without this hormone, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy can no longer progress.
  2. Misoprostol – The second pill is taken 24 to 48 hours after the Mifepristone is taken. This medication causes cramping, contractions, and bleeding to expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

The Abortion Pill protocol is often described as very safe and very simple, “like a heavy period,” — however recent research now documents that 1 in 10 patients experience a serious adverse event.

In the most comprehensive U.S. study to date of Abortion Pill safety, the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) analyzed insurance claims data from 865,727 mifepristone abortions (2017–2023).*

This study identified a serious adverse event rate of 10.93%:

1 in 10 Women Had a Serious Adverse Event

  • 10.2% of women experienced serious medical complications within 30 days of taking the abortion pill.
  • More than 1 in every 10 patients had to seek emergency or follow-up care due to serious complications.

6.3% Required Follow-Up Surgery

  • In over 6% of cases, the abortion was incomplete, meaning tissue remained in the uterus, and the patient had to undergo a surgical abortion or procedure such as a dilation and curettage to remove the remaining tissue.
  • The risk of surgery increases the further along a woman is in her pregnancy.

Hemorrhage and Infection Risks

  • Over 2% of women experienced hemorrhage (excessive bleeding), which can be extremely dangerous and requires immediate medical treatment.
  • 1.5% of women developed infections such as sepsis, requiring antibiotics, hospitalization, and/or emergency care.

Significant Increase in Emergency Room Visits

  • From 2017 to 2023, the percentage of women seeking ER care after chemical abortion rose by 500%.
  • The study’s authors note that this trend shows a growing need for transparency about the risks involved.

Why This Matters for You

You deserve to make decisions based on complete and accurate information, not just what’s convenient or marketed.

While the abortion pill may be presented as a simple or “at-home” solution, these numbers show that real women are experiencing real complications, and many are caught off guard by the pain, bleeding, or follow-up procedures they were not expecting. Some complications have resulted in extremely serious medical events.

If you are considering abortion, it’s important to know:

  1. How far along you are: gestational age affects both the effectiveness and safety of the abortion pill
  2. Whether the pregnancy is viable: some pregnancies end naturally (miscarriage) and may not require intervention
  3. What risks you may face: what to do if complications arise
  4. Who to call if you feel unsafe or unsupported: You don’t have to go through this alone. You don’t have to rush into a decision. You deserve time, space, and support.
