How do I know if I may be pregnant?

Amnion offers free pregnancy testing. A woman can become pregnant any time she has sexual intercourse or is in a situation where sperm could have entered her vagina. If you have been in a situation like this, a pregnancy test could give you more information about whether or not you are pregnant.

How accurate is a pregnancy test?

Our tests are laboratory rated. They can detect the HCG pregnancy hormone as early as 7 days after conception or 21 to 24 days after the first day of your last period. The test is over 99% accurate.

How does a pregnancy test work?

Seven to ten days after conception, our test can pick up a hormone that your body produces when you are pregnant. If the test is done too early in the pregnancy, it may not be able to measure the hormone yet and result in a "false negative" test.

Can I have a retest if my test is negative and my period doesn't start?

Yes, you may be rescheduled for another test. The HCG hormone doubles every 2.2 days during the first three months of pregnancy.

Should I see a doctor if I have a second negative test and have not started my period?

If you have concerns about missed periods and your pregnancy test continues to be negative, you should see your health care provider for assessment. If you need resources for health care, Amnion can provide you referrals.

I already have children. Does the Center have any resources for me?

Yes! We offer baby clothes, diapers, and supplies, as well as parenting support and parenting classes—all free!

Are there any risks in taking the Morning After Pill?

(sometimes called "emergency contraception" or “Plan B”)

Yes. Some of the possible side effects of this drug are cramping and abdominal pain, fatigue, irregular and unpredictable menstrual periods, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and breast tenderness. The Morning After Pill works in 3 ways - inhibits ovulation, prevents sperm from reaching the egg, and works to prevent implantation. The last way it can work would cause an abortion, because it would prevent the fertilized egg from continuing to live.

What if I’m not pregnant this month? Can the Center help me prevent pregnancy?

We would be glad to help you prevent an unplanned pregnancy. We offer information about sexuality and can give you education about making healthy choices in the future; specifically choices about relationships and what healthy sexual activity means.
