Amnion partners with Abortion Pill Reversal Providers
How the abortion pill works: A medication abortion, i.e.,“the abortion pill,” consists of two pills taken 48 hours apart. The first pill, Mifepristone (also called Mifeprex or RU-486), blocks the maternal body’s production of Progesterone, which is a hormone needed to keep the growing baby alive. The second pill is Misoprostol, also called Cytotec, and it causes uterine contractions to expel the baby from the uterus. The abortion pill protocol is now FDA approved through 70 days since last menstrual period (LMP).
How the reversal process works: A reversal can be initiated during the period of time between when the first pill was taken, and before the second pill is taken. The reversal process usually begins with an injection of Progesterone, which if administered quickly enough, preserves the baby. Additional progesterone will be needed for some time afterward as well, typically until the end of the first trimester.
The success rate is approximately 55-60%.
To date, 175 babies have been born after their mother initiated and then reversed a medication abortion; 100 more babies are currently “on the way.”
How will Amnion be partnering with Abortion Pill Reversal (APR)?
We will be providing on-going care via emotional support, counseling, material assistance, and follow up ultrasound services, in conjunction with local APR medical providers.
We want to help spread the word about APR! The APR process is not one that many people know about, and we want to make sure women know all of their options.
